Japan Update #11 - Japanese Ryokan

I am in Tokyo for the weekend. Decided to stay at a Japanese Ryokan, which is basically the Japanese equivalent to an American Bed and Breakfast. A few differences, though...

The owners are very friendly. They speak a few words of English, which with my little bit of Japanese lets us communicate well enough. It feels like I am staying in their home (which basically I am, given that their bedrooms are right off of the main dining room area).

I am staying in a Japanese style room. It is basically a room with tatami floors and a futon mattress right on it. Has a low table (about the same height as an American coffee table) with a pad for me to sit on if I was going to eat or write or anything like that. The table isn't very comfortable for me to sit at, but the futon is quite comfy to sleep in.

The Ryokan does not have individual bathrooms in each room, but instead has communal ones. On each floor is a room of toilets - a couple of urinals and stalls. Not separate toilet rooms for men and women, so conceivably I could be standing at a urinal as a woman walked in to use a stall (didn't happen while I was there).

The ryokan has a Japanese style ofuro (bath). This is much like the ones I have been to and talked about before, but here I was able to take some photos. Hopefully this gives a better feel for what it is like... You start by sitting on the little stool, washing yourself, and then fully rinsing yourself off. Traditionally, you'd use a bucket or scoop to take water out of the tub to rinse, but nowadays they have shower heads installed to make it all easier. Then you soak in the tub for relaxation. No soap should be used in the tub - you should treat it more like an American hot tub. At this ryoken, there are separate bath rooms for men and women, but it is not uncommon to be sharing your bath with another person of the same sex.
